Light and time

Light and time

At what time will the light arrive, when will it be bright and for how many hours, minutes, seconds will it last? When will the light return, and if the light is engulfed by the passing clouds, at what stage will it eventually dissolve and disappear?
It is rare that a day should pass without my mind wandering to reflections on the nature of light and its time-sensitive presence. Even during those days when I am not dependent on the light for photographic reasons, I still find myself analysing the light throughout my day.
The many long, grey and dark months endured during the winter stretch in Scandinavia can pass slowly, and the light gracing the skies with bright highlights is a welcome and treasured rarity.

This year, I have decided to view the light from another angle, allowing the light to be, watching and observing, recording it mentally, but not with the camera. Instead I have chosen to photograph the dark, the lack of light and the arterial light.
Exposure is that moment in photography when the shooting equipment is exposed to direct light. Exposure is measured in lux seconds — the longer the exposure setting, the more light is allowed to pass through the lens and on to the ‘recording’ film or electronic sensor plane. The exposure is the combined values of time (the shutter speed), the amount of light (the aperture of the lens) and the light (the luminance of the scene). These three values will always work in relation to each other and are wholly dependent on one another. Light and time, time and light – in infinite combinations. It is impossible to ignore time in photography, both as a viewer and a photographer, just like it is impossible to not be reflected by time, the frozen images and timeless memories, the ending of something and the beginning of something else, as one reality becomes another, something subjective.
A glimpse, something diffuse, intangible, a memory, a time, another world – all by the slightest shards of light and time.
